Mechanical Vibration Laboratory
Lab-in-charge:
Dr. Shitendu Some
Details of Laboratory:
Universal Vibration Apparatus (TM150 and TM155) are
used for conducting various experiments such as single pendulum, compound
pendulum, bifilar suspension for determination of M.I., spring mass system with
damped vibrations and others. A universal frame is provided upon which quick
and easy assembly of various experiments can be done. The students can easily
assemble the experiments and study the theory of vibrations practically.
Laboratory Equipment
TM150
TM155
Course Outcome:
Upon completion of this laboratory course, students will be able to
-
Perform experiments and manipulate key variables to investigate the
mechanisms and mechanical vibrations’ principles.
- Investigate acquired experimental data of mechanical systems with derived
quantities.
- To determine the natural frequency of vibration problems that contains
single and multi-degree of freedom systems.
- To calculate the damping coefficient of single and multi-degree of freedom
systems.
Safety and Security Rules to be Followed in Laboratory:
- Always wear shoes before entering in the lab.
- Do not touch anything without the permission of instructor/ lab assistant.
- Read carefully the lab manual before performing experiments.
- Do not tamper measuring instruments.
- Do not open the casing of the equipment.
- Switch off the power supply to the experimental setup on completion of the
experiment.
- Maintain clean and orderly laboratories and work area
- Be aware of the various experiment controls (start button, stop button, speed
control) for each experiments.
- Do not leave experiments running unattended.
- Any injuries should be reported immediately for proper care.
Laboratory Courses Conducted:
- Experiment on reversible pendulum respect to the two hinge points.
- Experiment on bifilar suspension pendulum and steel bob pendulum.
- Experiment on damping on decay behaviour for the beam vibration.
- Demonstration of the resonance curve for different frequency and different
damper position
- Comparison between the theoretical and the experimental natural
frequency for various spring constant.
- Comparison between the theoretical and the experimental natural
frequency of a free torsional vibration under 5-degree twist.
- Comparison of theoretical and experimental time periods of two type of
pendulum (wood and steel).
- Comparison between theoretical and experimental time period of rod
pendulum.
