Inspire Camp

Director's Message

Dear Students,
I take this opportunity to welcome you all to the National Institute of Technology Sikkim (NIT Sikkim) to participate in the INSPIRE Summer Internship Camp. As the name suggests, it is an initiative or effort taken by us to inculcate in you the excitements of creative pursuits in science and help you understand the subject of your interest, and thus to build the required critical human resource pool to strengthen and expand the Science and Technology programme and research base. By interning here, in coming six days, you will have the privilege of listening to and interacting with several distinguished scientists from IITs, NITs, IIITs, IISc and so on.

As the Director of NIT Sikkim particularly, I have been experiencing the disappointments of my young faculty members that in Sikkim schools there is lack of awareness about the NIT although we have been going out for several community development programmes. I hope, this programme will reach us out little bit more.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. So get up and get going. Acting consistently and towards your ambition is important. It is your clear vision towards your goal and aspiration that assures you of reaching your goal. There is no shortcut to success. Always welcome the opportunities, because there is an island of opportunity in the middle of every difficulty. Keep up the spirits and study with great determination. Learning is no longer about simply accruing knowledge. You must think critically, be able to analyze evidences and devise new pathways and solutions.

Regarding you goal, the joy today is perceived mostly in material gain and physical pleasure. But there is an infinite world of pleasure in scientific realisation of things and the phenomenon which are perhaps the same in Quantum. This also brings you closer to self- realisation. As told by Albert Einstein I strongly believe that "One should guard against preaching to young people success in the customary form as the main aim in life. The most important motive for work in school and in life is pleasure in work, pleasure in its result, and the knowledge of the value of the result to the community."

It is also important to be clear on what your fears are. They are by far the biggest obstacle that you have to deal with in order to move ahead. Your desire and ambition should be greater than your fear of failing. According to Swami Vivekananda, all the strength lies in the heart and in the mind, don't look for strength anywhere else but within. It is right that you can't choose your circumstances, but you can choose to overcome them. So gear up for the challenges of life and show to the world what you are. At the end I will again quote from Einstein, "A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of others." Do not forget your fellow family members and fellow human beings. One more important thought is that you have to have control on your emotion. 'A human with emotion and a matter with motion destroy, but they and only they can create when controlled'. Let's work being an integral part of the Supreme System of the Universe (Some call It God).
